The Grand Indian Comeback of Harley Davidson

Strong winds and devil wheels are approaching again soon as Iconic American motorcycle brand Harley-Davidson has regained leadership in the high-end motorcycle segment in India.

Vrooming Past Challenges

The challenging market on account of Covid-19 induced disruptions could not deter the Milwaukee manufacturer, which has emerged as market leader in the 1,000cc and above segment.

With 601 motorcycles sold in FY2022, Harley-Davidson has nearly tripled its sales compared to FY2021, when it managed to sell 206 units. Its market share in the category has risen to 37% in the previous financial year (FY22), compared to 27% in FY21.

Turn back the clocks just a couple of years and the American icon’s Indian operations were in a state of disarray after 11 years of being in the country. While it withdrew from an active capacity in the Indian market, the bikemaker did manage to strike a deal to keep its motorcycles out there for Indian moto-heads.

Hero Takes Charge

The market leadership in this segment comes nearly two years after Hero MotoCorp, the homegrown two-wheeler giant, took charge of the sales and distribution of the Harley-Davidson brand in India.

Since then, Hero MotoCorp has expanded the distribution network of Harley-Davidson to 13 full-fledged dealerships and 10 authorized service centres across the country, exclusively for Harley-Davidson customers.

Too long? Here’s a one-liner: Harley-Davidson sees upturn in sales and leads premium segment in India, spurred by partnership with Hero MotoCorp.
